William Castle was infamous for dreaming up gimmicks to add that little 'something' to his films. In this case it was a process called 'EMERGO', a glow-in-the-dark skeleton on a wire that would float over the cinema audience at a crucial point in the action (the audience would often pelt the poor skeleton with popcorn boxes and coke cans).
