HAI---YAAAH! Also known as King Boxer, this 1973 Shaw Brothers production was one of the first kung fu movies ever made, and the first one I ever saw, at the tender age of 14. The plot is a familiar one...promising young student seeks to avenge the death of his master against the wicked enemy, and also win the big tournament which will decide who is the 'King Boxer' of the region. He does this by using the secret and deadly 'Iron Palm' technique which his teacher entrusted to him. Lo Lieh makes a great hero, and the fights themselves were certainly an eye-opener back in the 70s as most westerners knew nothing of these fighting arts. The two 'masters from Japan' , who resemble a pair of poodles with bamboo poles, are a real nasty duo who almost finish off our hero...but thanks to his indomitable fighting spirit he eventually kicks some major ass in the contest and wins the day. Also watch out for the incredible EYE GOUGING scene, which had me squirming in my seat that day in the old Ashford Astoria back in 73! A wonderful film which has a special place in my heart. More bone crunching buffoonery from Sneaky Elephant SOON!
