The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (1919)

Is that your new Ikea wardrobe? No, it's...THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI! This fantastic 1919 masterpiece of German cinema was directed by Robert Wiene and stars Werner Krauss as Dr Caligari. Conrad Veidt plays Cesare, the creepy somnambulist who has been asleep for decades, but leaves his casket  to carry out atrocious murders in the town of Holstenwall. The tale is narrated by Francis (Friedrich Feher), who is taken to the fair by his friend Alan and Jane, Alan's fiancee. They are introduced to the Doctor, who keeps Cesare in a box, only releasing him as part of his sideshow act to 'tell the future'. A prophecy comes true, bodies are discovered and Caligari's grisly past is revealed! This amazing silent film has English subtitles and captions, and still grips the viewer today, despite the theatrical arm-flinging performances.Cesare is REALLY CREEPY with his skinny frame and spooky panda eyes, and there is a humorously shocking twist in the tail! A SILENT CLASSIC! More monochrome madness from Sneaky Elephant's moody movies SOON!
