LOOK AT THE BEAK ON THAT! This gigantic cousin of The Great Gonzo first flew onto our movie screens in 1957, and the world hasn't been the same since! The monster itself set new standards for sheer hamfisted special effects, being constructed from a ball of feathers, a length of fire hose, and two ping pong balls for eyes, all dangling from a (visible) strand of wire.Even so, it still managed to out-act the humans, especially Jeff Morrow as the leading man (have you noticed that dumbasses in movies are always named MITCH???). This was a great letdown after his previous triumph as Exeter the Alien in the brilliant THIS ISLAND EARTH of 1955 (Morrow that is, not the bird).The script does him no favours to be honest, having apparently been written by a psychotic chimpanzee on mescaline. There is an amusing anecdote concerning Jeff Morrow's role in this film...apparently the 'monster' scenes were only shot once all the human actors had been filmed, and as a result none of them knew what the Claw looked like until the movie was released. Mr. Morrow attended the opening night at the cinema in his home town, and when the creature made its appearance, the audience jeered and laughed so much that Morrow had to turn up the collar of his coat and slink red-faced from the theatre before anyone recognised him! This movie is best viewed blind drunk, or better still just blind.But look on the bright side, after this EVERYTHING ELSE will seem fantastic!
